The classification of hazardous waste is:
Any waste considered harmful to people or the environment. Companies are required by law to ensure their hazardous waste is segregated from other waste streams and disposed of appropriately.
Hazardous waste is found in almost all businesses. It includes things such as fluorescent tubes, aerosols, toner cartridges, paint, lead acid batteries, oil filters, industrial chemicals and asbestos.
These kinds of wastes need to be collected separately from other waste streams in specialist containers.
Hazardous waste is disposed of at special, controlled sites adhering to strict legislation and environmental practices.
As a business and a waste producer you must follow these steps in England if your business:
- Produces hazardous waste
- Holds or stores hazardous waste
- Has hazardous waste removed from its premises
You must register premises where you produce or hold (eg collect or remove) hazardous waste if you produce more than 500kg of hazardous waste in any 12 month period.
