Cleaning Cupboard Essentials

Here’s advice on the right products to stock in your cleaning cupboard

Consumables

When we talk about consumables, we mean anything that can be used in the process of our daily use of the washroom. What we mean by that are things like soap and toilet roll, hand towels and air fresheners, and of course cleaning chemicals.

As a bare minimum you should have the following types of washroom cleaning and hygiene products in stock:

Multi-purpose Bactericidal cleaner – This is a must-have and is for all hard surfaces.

Concentrated disinfectant – Fluids like this are perfect for diluting and using to make floors clean and hygienic.

A quality Glass cleaner – As no one likes a streaky window.

Don’t forget a Sulphamic toilet cleaner – This won’t take the chrome of taps if it’s used there by mistake and more importantly it won’t damage any stainless steel urinals you may have in your washroom.

Janitorial supplies

Multi coloured Cleaning Cloths – This should be an obvious one, but there are lots of different types available depending on the job in hand.

Black Sacks – These should be strong enough to hold at least 6 kilo’s. If you produce any clinical waste, it must be put into a specific sack like a yellow sack.

Sponge Scourers and Green Scourers – Hopefully we don’t have to tell you what these are for!

We probably don’t need to spell it out to you but cleaning chemicals are controlled, in regulation, by COSHH. You must have full details of all cleaning chemicals ingredients as some can be harmful to health. You must also provide PPE for all cleaning staff including gloves, the correct clothing and of course the correct non-slip shoes suitable for the washroom environment.

Janitorial Equipment

Finally, it is very important to have the correct washroom cleaning equipment to keep your premises as clean and tidy as possible and to deal with any emergencies that may inevitably arise when people come into contact with soap and water.

Most of these will seem obvious, but just in case, here’s a list of essential workplace cleaning equipment:

Mop and bucket – For all your hard floor areas.

Broom

Dustpan and brush

Toilet brushes

Vacuum cleaner – Choose a reputable brand and a robust model.

If you want to go one step further, you could consider a scrubber drier which is easy to handle.
